From the Music Director of Big River

This fall 2018, the highly-anticipated Mason Musical takes place October 25-28 in our Concert Hall. Mason’s School of Theater collaborates once again with the School of Music to present Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, an adaptation of Mark Twain’s classic. We sat down with Joe Walsh, Mason Faculty and Music Director, to get his thoughts on the work.

What inspired you to choose Big River as this year's Mason Musical?

J.W.
The idea of focusing on what unites us rather than what divides us is one that surrounds us in the news, world politics, and everyday life. This is one of the principal themes of Big River, so the work is as relevant today as it was when it was published in the 1880s.

How would you describe the piece to today's audiences?

J.W.
The story centers on the journey of “Huck,” a young boy with wisdom beyond his years. Through his journey, he shows us how to raise the human spirit above the limits of the institutions of the time. The message is timeless and important now more than ever.

Could you tell us more about the musical components of Big River?

J.W.
The music was composed by pop-song composer Roger Miller, who wrote “King of the Road.” This was his only Broadway venture, but he really got it right putting together a first-rate musical comedy that swept the Tony Awards®. The style is bluegrass, so we have a jazz ensemble of drums, guitars, bass, trumpet, trombone, soprano sax, clarinet, flute, and violin with the added harmonica and banjo/mandolin. Most students in the band come from the School of Music but a few are from the School of Theater and will appear on stage.

What is your favorite musical number in Big River  and why?

J.W.
There are so many memorable tunes. It is really tough to choose just one, but I would have to save “Free at Last” which comes at the end of the show and really sums up what the message of Big River is all about.

Why should our audience support this production and the work of CVPA?

J.W.
This production really showcases Mason’s growing Musical Theater Program. The cast is extremely talented as actors, dancers, and singers.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

J.W.
It is such a wonderful opportunity for Mason students to be able to work with director Thomas Jones II, an accomplished professional and winner of numerous Helen Hayes Awards, and with choreographer Stefan Sittig, who brings an experienced hand to the dance element in the production.

Audiences won’t want to miss the product of this wonderful collaboration!
