Celebrate with Aurelio Martínez

A performance by "one of the great artists of Latin America" (London Evening Standard), Aurelio Martínez, has recently been added to Mason’s fall calendar. This Honduran singer-songwriter, guitarist, and percussionist and his band will present an intimate evening of Garifuna music filled with Latin and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. His performance is part of Hispanic Heritage Month, which officially began on September 15.  

Celebrated as the Cultural Ambassador of the Garifuna nation, Aurelio Martínez uses his musical talents and political awareness to shed light on the history of the Amerindian and West African descendants living on the coasts of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Co-presented by several departments within the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Aurelio Martínez’s performance will be featured alongside various other events, including masterclasses and a conversation with the artists.

Honduran musician Aurelio Martínez joins Mason’s Chair of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Rei Berroa, for a moderated conversation about Garífuna. Together, they will explore history, music, politics, diversity, and the undeniable commitment of art and the artist to tell the truth to uplift and celebrate the human condition. Free and open to the public.
